Summary: | The aircraft overran the runway during takeoff. Excessive nose-up attitude of the aircraft during the takeoff run producing a partly stalled condition and excessive drag. The pilot who had only limited experience in the Comet aircraft, elected to takeoff at night at the maximum permissable weight for the prevailing conditions. The circumstances required strict adherence to the prescribed takeoff technique, which was not complied with. First fatal crash of a commercial jet aircraft. The aircraft was named Empress of Hawaii. |
